Awesome?

I don't want to derail this, so I'm not going to kick your ass.

But awesome?

You need to read more.

I want to derail this. I read Eragon. Then I read the second book, and it went all pussy-ass vegan. Didn't even finish the book.

Reading anything good?

Post by KingCrab »

Let us know what books you're reading. Recommendations, discussions, favorites, anything you want about books.

My recommendations:

The Night Angel Trilogy
The Giver
Mistborn series
Most anything by R.A. Salvatore
Eragon series
Call of the Wild
Brian Jacques' Redwall abbey series
Rangers Apprentice
Macbeth
The Hunger Games
LOTR Books

I'm mainly a fantasy reader, but I'll give almost anything a shot.

Eragon series
Prepare to be derailed.
In other news, the latest book i read was Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell (recommended by my psych teacher) it wasn't bad. If you like cats and fantasy i recommend Warriors, i read some of the books like 5 years ago and they were ok.
Edit: The Lightning Thief and the Storm Thief are also good books from what i remember.

I've sloppily merged the derail-threat about books from the picture thread to here.

Eragon? Come on guys...

Never been a big fan of the wheel of time either. The universe just doesn't do it for me.

We need to get some SciFi up in this thread. My favorites:

I, Robot
Foundation
Ringworld
Neuromancer
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
A Fire upon the Deep
The first law of thermodynamics states that you don't discuss thermodynamics.

I missed out on being forced to read that so I am now. I just came off another Orson Scott Card book, "Empire". It's good for an easy read but it isn't very...intelligent. It's just an action story which was a bit disappointing. I always felt a bit condescended by it, however it WAS a good narrative, I'll give it that.

If you want a very intelligent book with enough in-depth and witty story to actually immerse yourself in while still having a huge amount of action, I HIGHLY recommend my first recommendation of The Night Angel Trilogy. The book is much more mature than the Eragon books and flows smoothly throughout all three books.

Anything by Iain M Banks, there's nothing I can fault. He does Sci-Fi how it should have been done all along. Best of the bunch are Consider Phlebas, Excession and The Algebraist.

For the fantasy fags, there's
Shadows and Betrayal by Daniel Abraham
Darkness that Comes Before by R Scott Bakker
these are the first books in respective series. Also try Crown of Stars series by Kate Elliott.

I'm very picky and pretty much hate 'mainstream' fantasy, i.e. hurr durr Dragon warriors, wise elves, dark lords and holy kings etc etc.

Wind through the Keyhole in case you didn't read it already ;)

I've just started to read the 2nd part of Hans Jürgen Massaquois autobiography. A quite interesting life story so far - he spent his childhood in Hamburg during the nazi era... as a black. The second part focuses on his immigration and life in the USA after the war.
The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

Currently my most read book series is Dan Abnett's: Gaunt's Ghosts which is situated in the Warhammer 40k universe. It is mainly about the first regiment of Tanith in the dark ages of the 41 millennium, that is fighting against the forces of chaos in the Sabbath crusade.

While reading you can feel the heat of the battle, the despairs and hopes of the Soldiers of the Imperial Guard.

Dan Abnett writes a very thrilling and captivating story about the men and women under Ibram Gaunt, the leader the Ghosts.

The first edition of the novel series fell into my hands as a gift, I helped a school-mate to solve problems with his computer. Since then I've come to the taste. Before that I had avoided until then everything about warhammer.

Many books which i like but mostly i like the travel books because i am a tourist and want to get more and more knowledge about different countries of the world. My favorite book is "Naples '44" by Norman Lewis, he arrived in war-torn Naples as an intelligence officer in 1944, ostensibly employed by the army to liaise with the locals.
