IRC TRPG (Try #2)

I'm running a FUDGE (1995 rules) campaign set (loosely) in D&D's forgotten realms setting.

Players:
  • Faewyn (Elf Rogue) (Hit_Girl)
  • Fahir (Dwarf Wizard [Fire/Earth/Mind]) (KevinSweijen)
  • Horlamin (Orc Fighter) (Hylloch)
With timezones being the way they are, however, we're not always able to get everyone on at the same time, so I'm going to add one or two more players to the roster. I figure I'll always be able to have at least three people that way!

We USUALLY play Fridays at 6:00 PM GMT, but the next game will be on Saturday (April 28th) at the same time.

If you're interested, give me a shout here! Don't worry if you've never played a TRPG before, newbies are more than welcome.

I might be up for this. How would you handle the extra players? Is it just going to be 3 out of whoever is there at the time, will there be more people in some sessions, or what?

You'll make a character same as the others, and I'll find some story-kosher way to introduce you.

Characters of players that are absent for a session get NPCd. We understand that they're there, witnessing the events, following along, but they don't take an active role.

They also don't get experience.

My PM to the first few players:

Hafnium wrote:(If I accidently sent this to all event planners, disregard this)

I'm told that you all are going to join our little IRC RPG game. Fantastic.

I've been trying to decide how to run the game. I thought I was going to cut out all the hard work involved in setting up a FUDGE setting, and go with D&D, but I've just spent a few hours with D&D for the first time in a few years, and my reasons for ditching it are flooding back.

SO, no word on the system yet, but that shouldn't stop the creation of characters.

The story is thus:
You all are adventurers, traveling in seek of fame and fortune, or for some other reason of your choosing. You have traveled to the town of Mosstone in the kingdom of Tethyr after hearing rumors of bounties for adventurers in the town.

Mosstone is a small town of only a bit over a thousand, but it sits on a major coastal trade road, and is unusually wealthy. The recent end of a civil war in the region has brought new prosperity in the form of farms, started by the veterans of the conflict.
I will be using, LOOSELY, the Forgotten Realms as a campaign setting. If you want origins, deities, and what have you, http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page is a great resource. Please though, do not have your character originate from tethyr, and do not have your character originate from much further east than Vilhon Reach. It is rare for people from the other side of the inner sea to travel to coast of the Sea of Swords.

Standard fantasy races are fair game:
  • Human
  • Elf
  • Half-Elf
  • Dwarf
  • Halfling
  • Gnome
  • Half-Orc
I will allow wizards/sorcerers/clerics this time, but not in the normal D&D sense.

A wizard is someone who has studied a certain facet of magic, such as fire, healing, divination, nature. If you want to be a wizard, choose two schools. You come up with the schools, but if they are too broad, I will have you refine them.

A sorcerer is someone who possesses some innate magical ability. A sorcerer can manifest a great variety of magic, but with less potency than that of a wizard.

A cleric is someone who derives their magic from a deity. (Deities can be found here: http://forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Portal:Deities) Their magic must be within the domain of their deity, and server their deity's will. A cleric's magic is not only strengthened by her experience, but by her soul's standing with her chosen deity.

I'm not going to dabble with named spells; that always seemed so artificial. We'll have you guys describe the effect, and then I'll do some rolling to determine how potent the magic is.

Beyond these magic wielders, any sort of mundane hero is acceptable. A bow wielding ranger elf, lover of forests, tracking, and the hunt. A knife wielding rouge, quick on his feet and with his blade. A armored warrior, with a sword and shield. The choice is yours.

Do not over-equip or over-power your characters, I WILL call you out on it. You're heroes are not new to adventure, but they are not great titans either. Early 20s for humans, or 40s-50s for elves and dwarves is a good age to shoot for. You will not be the mightiest men on the planet, that just wouldn't make sense. You will have to take care not to engage a foe stronger than yourselves.

I'm not interested in D&D's grid-morality system. I think its quite stupid, actually. Just come up with a motivation for your characters that explains why they would choose to travel in a group and seek out adventure. You don't have to be a good guy, but you have to play well with others. I will try to to dictate the game here, but I will not allow intra-party conflict. That's just not going to be fun in the end.

I've probably missed something, but I'll figure it out.

So, PM me your character concepts and we'll work out any kinks.
Hafnium wrote:Since we're using the D&D world, albeit not the mechanics, we'll be using its economic system as well.

You players will be starting off with a wealth of 120gp each.

Prices for items are available here: http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/equipment.htm

Remember, I'm not going to hand-wave things like, what do you eat? Where and when do you sleep? I'm not going to smash them in your face, but if you don't maintain your character's health, I will warn you, and you will suffer realistic penalties for someone who hasn't eaten/slept.

The adventure IS based near a town, so you don't need to bring a bunch of food with. It, along with most mundane items, will be available for purchase within the game.

*Note: With the exception of Kevin's undisclosed MacGuffin, no enchanted items.
Hafnium wrote:We will be using FUDGE as the game system. The rules aren't that long of a read, and I suggest going over it at least once.

http://www.fudgery.net/fudge/1995/

We will be using the five-point FUDGE fantasy system described in the following link for attributes, skills, gifts, and faults, with only a few modifications.

http://www.panix.com/~sos/rpg/fudfive7.html

Our modifications:
  • Any weapon in the exotic category requires its own specific combat skill, in addition to any weapon that already has its own combat skill listed.
  • Ignore Magical Power and Magical Talent. Instead, we'll use the gifts Magic School ( school ). Sorcerers can use the Innate Magic gift as described.
  • Ignore the gift, Lucky.
  • Forget the entire described magic system. We're going free-form.
Remember, all equipment must be bought, excepting a set of normal clothes and a coin purse I'm assuming you all have.

http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/equipment.htm

The common items listed there will be readily available in-game once you acquire more wealth.

10:55 AM - Hit-Girl: will i have to think about food & water
10:55 AM - Hafnium: you'll want some way to carry water
10:55 AM - Hit-Girl: aight
10:55 AM - Hafnium: I'm sure there are waterskins on the equipment list
10:55 AM - Hit-Girl: yeah thats why i asked ^^
We're going to be operating on a first character made first served basis.

Drow are evil, except for one certain one. I wasn't allowing evil characters. Also, the next time I encounter an unusually good Drow that dual-wields scimitars, I don't know what I'm going to do.

All the good subraces are fine. Fahir is a Gold Dwarf.

Eh, there were a few in the lore. Including another one who taught the dual wielding scimtar drow. I guess it really wouldn't matter since the likeliness of a drow going above ground for long periods of time is unheard of. Delicate eyes adapted to darkness and what not

Actually, WotC is taking Forgotten Realms in a new direction.

We're not actually using D&D, just the setting. D&D's combat is a bit too contrived and involved, especially for playing with new players over IRC.

I believe I outlined all the requirements in my PMs that I've posted above.

I might be interested, however I can't give a definitive yes yet. I can try to be there Saturday, but with finals next week I don't know.

If anyone else can give you a solid yes and wants to have a go at it, let them have priority.

Cool, I need your character sooner rather than later. I need to find a way to weave him into the story.

I've just realized that I didn't post my revised magic system.

Revised Magic:
There is (for the purposes of 5-Point Fudge) an additional "magic" skill group. You take skills in this group corresponding with the flavor of your magic ability.

Before taking magic skills, however, you need to unlock them with a gift. There are four types of magic gifts:
  • Trained Magic: Choose three schools of magic that your character has studied and/or been trained in. You may take levels in corresponding skills.
  • Clerical Magic: Pick a god/goddess from the setting. You may take skills in the domains those gods, as well as a "Clerical Magic" skill. This skill governs magic that serves the alignment of your god. Eg, good clerical magic can smite undead, heal wounds, etc.
  • Innate Magic: This gift behaves differently than the others. Instead of taking skill ranks for your spells, you roll against your wisdom score. Additionally, this gift only provides for low level spells, as more impressive magic required formal training. This allows for simple illusions, light healing, and some very basic charms.

7 EST doesn't work very well. That's 1:00 AM for our more extremely placed players. Later is understandably worse.
