Speed-Building Contest (step 1: ideas)

Post by fragmer »

Hello! First of all, this is an IDEA for a contest, not an actual announcement or rule list. I would like to hear your feedback and suggestions on the idea.

Motivation
I started playing Minecraft a pretty long time ago, before any custom servers existed. Back then only a few hackers could fly (and we usually banned them on sight), everything was built by hand, and we only had two ranks - "op" and "not op". To be honest, I kinda miss the simplicity of those days. So, to bring back some of the charm of building by hand, I'd like to suggest a contest that promotes building by hand, without assistance from any hacks or commands, in a limited amount of time.

Organization
I'd like to organize the contest as a tournament, with two players facing off at a time. This would start with 16 (or 32, if there is enough interest) contestants, matched up by timezones/availability or on random. One player will be victorious in each match, so the total number of players will be halved each round (16 -> 8 -> 4 -> 2). Each match would last 15-30 minutes - shorter in low-level matches, and slightly longer in semi-finals/finals. Each match will have a different topic/subject, which will not be known to contestants in advance.

Building Rules
The building arenas are empty 32x32x32 cubes, placed side-by-side. No flying, speeding, building commands (with exception for /bind, /grass, /lava, /water, and /solid). When the topic/subject is revealed, timer is started and building can begin. When the timer is up, the map is locked and building stops.

Judging
I am not sure how to judge these contests yet. Winners of each round will be picked by the consensus of available trustee+ players.

Prizes
Also not sure about the prizes yet. I can provide a globally customized name to the first-place winner (will show up to all fCraft servers). There may be more tangible prizes too, we'll need to figure it out.

Themes
Here are some theme ideas I've had so far (taking some inspiration from LEGO set themes :P)
  • Wild West
  • Medieval Times
  • Prehistoric Times
  • Videogames
  • Military / War
  • Space
  • Ancient Civilizations (Egypt, Mayan, Babylon, Imperial China, etc)
  • Racing
  • City Scenes
  • The Future
Basically I am trying to keep the themes very broad.

i hate how i have to earn a color'd name. grr.

anyways i can judge if you guys want. im not super intrested as im not the greatest speed builder. i doubt i'll beat people like nessy and snave.

other prizes. possibly a color'd name but not global. or possibly if the player wants the mason rank. (only if the builds are good enough). their own private world.

we could setup an official fcraft youtube channel and feature the winner on that. (i know its not a good idea but its a possibility).

i know my ideas are dumb.

We did this for a little while on the other server dubbing it "Iron-Builder". Two contestants/teams were given a predetermined amount of space, and a giant wall was built between the two so they couldn't see each other. I think it'd be a great idea to try doing this again, but with multiple contestants as you stated. It will be interesting to see what people come up with when they're given a specific theme as the Iron-Builder was freestyle.
I'll go where ever my mind takes me.

for anyone who wants to use the name coloring on their own server

http://fcraft.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/fcraft/trunk/

set the revision to the latest stable one.

download the gnu tarball at the bottom.
download this http://www.microsoft.com/visualstudio/en-us

go into fcraft>trunk>fCraft>Player>Playerinfo.cs

open it with microsoft visual stuido. do a ctrl+f for fragmer. fill in any combination of letters that u want your name to be. its pretty self explanitory. save it.

Then got to fCraft>trunk> fcraft.sln at the top of the microsoft visual go under build. and set it to release. tgen build it. then bin>release run it from there as a test. then move the fcraft.dll to your server and done.

Let the Trustees judge. Also I remember Hafnium saying something (on the subject of donating) about not wanting to hand out colored names cause it would interfere with the idea of equality, with which I agree. However in this case it could provide others with an incentive to participate. There is a however to that one as well though, in the end we could end up with too many colored names, confusing the shit out of everyone. Namely guests.

I'd probably limit participation to at least builders+, to filter out the newbiest of players.

I agree that giving out too many custom names would make the chat messy (like /title and /color did in MCLawl). I just couldn't think of anything else that doesn't involve money, as I am personally pretty broke.

Also I think the themes/subjects should be pretty general (like "transportation") to avoid limiting players too much. I don't want to make it totally random though, as that would be harder to judge.

Sounds like a good idea, I mean whoever wins this wouldn't nessesarily be one of the best builders, they're probably perfectionists and would get stuck on one features for too long

Haha this is a great idea! No hacks, no commands, only vanilla building. I can see myself falling off my build and towering up again and again so I suggest we have pre-made arenas with different shaped water pillars for each round. We could let the contestants look at the pillar configuration for 2 minutes before the contest to form some sort of strat. And the finals shouldn't have ANY water! The contest theme could be revealed by having a judge /c air an obsidian wall moments before the contest, revealing a sprite of some sort. Like a house, or a flag, or a mario, etc.

I thought of a few themes:

- Pirates
- Rain Forest
- Robots
- Oriental

Also I think maybe a few Contests should not be specific to themes. Just so you can build whatever you want - absract or not.

you said u were good at that. =/

to speed things up. more then one competition going on at once.

or to make things more intresting. in the finals we shorten the time limit to add difficulty.

@Hog662 - I would rather extend the finals, to allow players to carry out more ambitious and interesting builds.

I came up with a similar idea a while back, see if the "buildrcomp" map still exists.

Oh god, that was a long damn time ago. Back in the MC# days; we had a lava timer. Whoever won that got OP if I remember right. I remember I DIDN'T win because my barn was too big to finish in time.

*Unneacesary bump of bumpyness*

What ever happend to this "FContest"? Was it banished? D:

I think we should rethink this, now that we got maps that ppl that donate get, we have colored names, maybe that should be in the rewards?

If you win, you get to chose to EITHER swap the colour of your name or you get a map. Simple as that. :p
