Quick logic puzzle for you

Just spent a bit of time solving a riddle and I thought "Hey, other people might enjoy this".

What you need to do is work out which man of which nationality owns given the following clues. Keep in mind that there are no prizes or anything, so don't google the answer and spoil it. You should be able to show how you came up with it. If you think you know the answer and wish to put it forward, please, PUT IT IN HIDDEN TAGS for people who want to solve this on their own.

Each man comes from a different nationality, lives in a different colour house, owns a different type of pet, drinks a different type of beverage and smokes a different brand of cigar. Find who owns the fish.
  • The British man lives in the red house.
  • The Swede keeps dogs as pets.
  • The Dane drinks tea.
  • The green house is left of the white house.
  • The man who smokes Pall Mall owns birds.
  • The green homeowner drinks coffee.
  • The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhill.
  • The man living in the centre house drinks milk.
  • The Norwegian lives in the first (left) house.
  • The make who smokes Blend lives next to the man with cats.
  • The man who keeps the HORSE lives next to the man who smokes Dunhill.
  • The man who smokes Bluemaster drinks beer.
  • The German smokes Prince.
  • The Norwegian lives next to the blue house.
  • The man who smokes Blend has a neighbour who drinks water.

I thought this was quite difficult, and I'm unable to do it :hmm:

I actually did try, but then about halfway, I found there was too little information (I probably missed some things, not saying there is no real solution)

Anyways, I'm going to show my hastily scribbled notes made with Microsoft Paint to reveal my frustration for everyone's entertainment. Everything above the red line was an actual guess/attempt, everything below is most likely wrong as I was getting pretty confused

The golden-yellow-star-like things are how I found my "final answer".
I fail
Hopefully someone will be able to tell me if I was at least on the right track before my train of thought crashed

I did enjoy it, nonetheless :D

Is this a typo, a regional saying, or what?

Ah, okay. Got it.

Code: Select all

color - YELO|BLUE|RED |GREN|WHTE
nationality - NORW|DANE|BRIT|GERM|SWED
pet - CATS|HORS|BIRD|FISH|DOGS
drink - WATR|TEA |MILK|COFF|BEER
smoke - DNHL|BLND|PLML|PRNC|BLUE
At first I tried it like animator, with mspaint, but I got too frustrated not being able to write in possibilities as well as things I knew for sure. I got it fairly quickly once I got some paper.

I screwed up halfway through and had to redo it, but I think I got it now :D

Here's my messy logic!
5 men (British, Swede, Dane, Norwegian, German)
5 colors (red, blue, yellow, green, white)
5 animals (dogs, birds, cats, horses, fish)
5 cigars (Pall Mall, Dunhill, Blend, Bluemaster, Prince)
5 drinks (tea, coffee, milk, beer, water)

Norwegian lives in leftmost house
Blue house is to the right of Norwegian
Green house is left of white, so it must be to the right of the blue house
White house must be to the right of green house (past the blue house)
Red house cannot be the leftmost house because the British man lives there
First house must be yellow
Second house is blue
Other houses might green-white-red or red-green-white

Norwegian man smokes Dunhill
Man in the blue house keeps horses

Man who smokes Blend doesn't drink water or beer, doesn't have cats or birds
The German doesn't drink beer or have birds or dogs or live in a yellow or red house

Man in the center house drinks milk, so the Norwegian and the man in the blue house don't drink milk

Norwegian man has to drink water

Man in the blue house smokes Blend, so whoever doesn't smoke Blend doesn't l ive in the blue house

Man in green house drinks coffee, so whoever doesn't drink coffee doesn't live in green house

Man in the blue house keeps horses, so whoever doesn't own horses doesn't live in the blue house; Dane lives in blue house

Dane owns horses, British owns birds

British man smokes Pall Mall

Norwegian drinks water, so his only neighbor (Dane) must smoke Blend

Swede smokes Bluemaster and drinks beer

German man drinks coffee, lives in green house

Swede lives in the white house

British drinks milk

Man in the center drinks milk, which is the British man (red house)

House order must be Yellow, Blue, Red, Green, White

Man who smokes Blend (Dane) lives next to the man with cats; man with cats must either be Norwegian or British

British man owns birds, so Norwegian man must own cats

The German man owns the fish!

Isn't this Einstein's brainfucking logic puzzle?

Correct indeed! It was the (answer)
German man!
Hafnium wrote:Isn't this Einstein's brainfucking logic puzzle?
It's attributed to him but it is likely not his. There are many other similar ones, and it is just basic logic implications. They taught this stuff at my high school, even, so I don't think it is completely originally his.
