Google+ VRPG

Post by Hafnium »

I'm putting together a Google+ video hangout roleplaying game. Nerd overload, eh?

If you've never played a D&D style RPG, don't worry. The rules we'll be playing with are easy to pick up.

I'll be the GM to get the ball rolling, but I'd love this to be a long-term thing with rotating GMs.

To start, I'm going to run a ~2 month campaign with a watered down version of FUDGE. The full verison of Fudge is available as a free PDF here:

http://www.fudgerpg.com/goodies/fudge-f ... ion-(PDF)/

You don't really need it though, I'll be fudging a lot of the mechanics. (haha)

The game will be played mostly live over Google+ video hangouts. You need a mic and the willingness to talk

Characters have four attributes: Stength, Dexterity, Charm, and Mentality. Their ability in these attributes goes as follows:

Terrible (-3), Poor (-2), Mediocre (-1), Fair (0), Good (+1), Great (+2), Superb (+3)

The average human has fair in every attribute. Starting PCs can redistribute their points (subtract from one attribute and add to another), but no attribute can be worse than poor or better than great. Starting PCs also get one free point to add to a skill of their choice.

You need to write a decent backstory for your character. Make sure he fits within the setting as described below. Don't worry about specific places and names and factions, the GM will help fill in those blanks.

The setting is a low-magic fantasy world. The PCs start in Veunda, Veun. Veun is a temperate country that deals mostly in agriculture. Veunda is the capitol city of Veun. A general map will be provided.

There are no "Wizards" in this setting. Magic is not very controllable. There are magical artifacts that have supernatural ability, but not blatant magic ability.

The PCs should be able to handle themselves in a city environment.

Skills will be decided based on your character's backstory.

If you want to take a fault, such as blindness, code of honor, fanaticism, etc., talk to me and we'll work out a way to make it worth your while.

We're going to assume that your character has mundane equipment fitting his backstory. You can be as specific as you want with that. If you don't fill it in, I will for you. YOur cahracter will also have one extraordinary articfact to start out with. Get an idea of what you want, nothing too powerful mind you, and I'll polish it to fit the setting and scale of the campaign. I'll work out some starting currency for each player as well.

We're going to be using FUDGE dice. Four of them, to be exact. These are six sided dice with two "+" faces, two "-" faces, and two blank faces. Plusses are ones, minuses negative ones, and blanks zeros. The cool thing about fudge dice is that they average to zero and have a gaussian distribution. To mess around with them, check out this roller: http://www.fudgery.net/omnium-gatherum/ ... oller.html

We'll have an active roller client set up for everyone to use during the game.

Combat is going to be heavily role-played with skill checks. Health is going to be tracked as wounds. No HP, because a broken arm isn't going to kill you, but it will hinder fighting. Criticals in combat could damage an internal organ, which will require medical attention. I'm going to try to make your physical condition enrich the roleplay, rather than be on a seperate level like it is in D&D.

That about covers it. If you're interested, post here with the times you are available for play. As of right now, I'm thinking of doing it from 10:00 PM Friday to 3:00 AM Saturday (UTC). This would be 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM EST and 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM PST. Bring your own beer/food, I'm not mailing you any.

If you have any ideas about anything, post here too.

I want to get ~ four players, so it'll be first come first serve. If I don't get enough from here, I'll be opening it up more globally.

I'd really prefer players that are 18+, and I'd prefer it if I actually knew the people in the game.

Players:

This is one sexy idea.

too bad my mind can't handle the mic/video part. oh well, it isn't leik you needed a silly vet to play a RPG and lose miserably. :P
you should record the Vrpg and put it on youtube as a proof-of-concept. Soon, everyone'll be having VRPG's over Google+ and skype and whatnot. :chicken:

You're such a nerd.

I wanna come in and watch once or twice. Mainly because I probably wouldn't enjoy PLAYING it as much as I would watching you play it. But also because I like Google+ Video Hangouts but nobody wants to do them. I'll have to "join" you halfway through your campaign though, as my work won't allow me to view this.

I feel the fact it's a google+ hangout will deter a lot of people.

Making it a skype or even a mumble event would be better I think.

In any case, I don't have a webcam, and don't plan on getting one, regardless of price.

Would you guys be more interested in a IRC game? That could actually work out better. I could even train ISO to roll dice in-chat.

Yes, i've done an irc game before. It failed horribly because it was with a bunch of raging pre-teens but it was simple and easy to organize.

Been finalizing the campaign. This is a conversation with Cello modified to make sense without his side.

Hafnium: Gist of campiagn as it looks on paper now:
Hafnium: PCs will be from same extended family
Hafnium: sent to city to manage a shop after the passing of a relative
Hafnium: general chicanery to follow
Hafnium: Not entirely limited to the city
Hafnium: but with shop as base of operations
Hafnium: and primarily city plot lines
Hafnium: low-magic setting
Hafnium: Humans only
Show
Hafnium: ehhh
Hafnium: I'm forgetting something
Hafnium: Oh, right
Hafnium: http://www.fudgerpg.com/goodies/fudge-f ... ion-(PDF)/
Hafnium: Its a very interesting system
Hafnium: we'll be going with these rules
Hafnium: with some modifications
Hafnium: I need to write up the skill list
Hafnium: which I'll have by the weekend
Hafnium: so
Hafnium: think up character concepts for a 20-30 year old human from a family with old money
Hafnium: the family's money comes from wool
Hafnium: they own a great deal of farmland in a northern country
Hafnium: and they supply a decent percentage of the continents cloth
Hafnium: No need to be all farmy though
Hafnium: more of a high society kinda thing
Hafnium: both social and combat ability will be good
Hafnium: your home country isn't feudal, per se
Hafnium: its technically a theocraxy
Hafnium: Its more of a renaissance era
Hafnium: in this part of the world anyway
Hafnium: starting country is south of the country you all come from
Hafnium: to the northeast theres a desert with barbarian tribes
Hafnium: west is the sea
Hafnium: south-east is a moist rainfforesty thing
Hafnium: beyond that is a small nation that subsists primarilt on fish
Hafnium: I have a basic map
Hafnium: not nailed down yet
Hafnium: I don't have anything on my PC with political boundaries
Hafnium: I've been doing that by hand
Hafnium: I'll scan and vector a political map tomorrow
