How Commercial Estimating Helps Control Construction Project Budgets?

I wanted to start a discussion about commercial construction estimating and how important it is before starting any commercial project. From what I’ve seen, commercial projects are much more complex than residential ones because there are multiple trades, large material quantities, equipment costs, and strict timelines involved.

Many contractors prepare rough estimates, but I think detailed estimating is very important, especially for offices, retail spaces, warehouses, and other commercial buildings. Without proper cost estimation, projects can easily go over budget due to unexpected material and labor costs.

In one of the recent projects I was involved in, we decided to use accurate commercial estimating services before finalizing the contractor and project budget. It really helped us understand the actual project cost, compare contractor bids, and avoid unexpected expenses during construction.

I’m curious to know how others here handle commercial project estimates. Do you prepare estimates in-house, use estimating software, or outsource estimating services before starting a project?
