I have the urge to do this again.

If you want a dwarf named for you, post here!

If you didn't catch the last one of these, let me fill you in. Dwarf Fortress is the least fun game you'll ever get addicted to. It is an incredibly deep fortress simulator with the best procedural generation you've ever seen. So much time has been put into this game already, and its still a "alpha."

What we do here is I play through a game. Well, not through, but I play a game. I chronicle everything that happens here. In the beginning, it'll just serve to illustrate how the game works. As the game goes on, I expect things to get wacky.

I'm going to start out playing one-three in-game months each day. We'll see how that works for me.

Granite, 251
Embark
1st Granite, 251: From the journal of Solon Risenlal,

We arrived in the valley the Mountainhome sent us to settle. Ingish is keeping Datan and Obok busy carving out some shelter.

I won't have much to do for a few months, since we have no way to prepare food beyond what we brought with us. I've been exploring our new home in my spare time.

We've decided to dig into the side of the cliff that bounds the valley to the west. I've noticed some Galena, Tetrahedrite, and Sphalerite exposed on the cliff. Ducim should be able to get some silver for crafting out of the Galena and Tetrahedrite, and the copper from the Tetrahedrite will serve for weapons for now.

There are plenty of lakes and trees, so we won't be hurting for building materials in these early years. Adil is busy felling wood for Zefon's workshop. The sooner Zefon can start working, the better. A dwarf can only tolerate sleeping in the dirt for so long, and Zefon has promised to make beds his first priority.

Slate, 251
Entrance
16th Slate, 251: From the journal of Ingish Logemusen,

Datan and Obok are making good time mining out the start of our fortress. The first storage area is totally mined out and almost free of debris. The second, which I've decided will be our food storage, is underway.

I've opted for a vertical fortress design. We'll have a central stair shaft that can be locked down on important levels in case of emergency.

For early defense, I've directed that three drawbridges be made in the entrance to the fortress. If we are ever attacked, we'll be able to pull them up and attack the invaders through fortifications in the walls.

Zefon got his workshop last month, and hes been busily making beds. I've asked him to build us some doors when hes done to seal the pantry and entrance.

Ooh, DF. I :sheep: DF.
First game I ever played I ran into this:
Image
That screenshot was taken after it'd had 3 months to heal. It turned 90% of my dwarves into rot. Litterally every single body part on the dwarf would start to rot rapidly, and the dwarf would only die when the rot reaches it's brain. The chinchilla is currently sitting at the bottom of a lake, unable to move but alive, surrounded by 5 layers of walls. When it finally heals enough to walk again, I'm fucked.

Aint that the truth. By the time I brought it down in the lake, I had resorted to using nobles to fight it, as my entire military and all my haulers were all rotting on the ground. My population went from 115 down to 17. I still have bodies on the bottom of that lake that I've had to mark off-limits to keep the dorfs from going in after the bodies. Caused SEVERAL tantrum spirals. Still too scared of the chinchilla to try to keep playing on that save.

You have to memorialize them with stone slabs.

I did, but only AFTER my dwarfs spent a week hauling bodies past the lake full of bodies. Even now, as this lake is RIGHT outside my fortress entrance, many of the dorfs going outside get upset at the sight of their dear families rotting.
